The DIY Portable Science Lab

Crime shows are full of dialogue about sending things off "to the lab" for testing. Sounds great. But is it possible these nameless technicians might actually prefer to get out of the lab from time to time?

It turns out the answer to that question is a resounding ‘Yes’, and Baines & Fricker, a U.K based design studio, are here to help by making this compact and portable research lab.

The kit comes in a heavy-duty flight case (thankfully with wheels), and lifts out easily – the case becoming a convenient stand for the lab and fold-out desk, setting it at what we’re told is the ideal height for research work.

The design was commissioned by Fieldwork, who wanted a versatile design that could enhance ethnographic studies by placing researchers in the field. They certainly seem to have got what they asked for. And although it was designed with ethnography in mind, it doesn’t stretch the imagination seeing it used for other fields of study as well.
