If you’re one of the 2.1 million Australians that have a hobby, chances are you’ve dealt with some preconceptions from your friends (or enemies) about what you get up to in your spare time.
With their the photo series Hobby Buddies, Swiss photographers Ursula Sprecher and Andi Cortellini take these stereotypes and blow them up.
Included in their 60-or-so portraits are poodle enthusiasts, cheerleaders, BDSM evangelists, Tupperware partiers, hat wearers, knitters and pigeon fanciers. Our favourite might be this posse of Santa Clauses, who look like they’re auditioning for a black metal band.
The attendees are arranged in uncomfortable, almost toy-like scenarios that exaggerate the notions outsiders already have of how these cliques roll. Interestingly, photographers don’t seem to get the same treatment. Guess Sprecher and Cortellini see their pastime as more of an art than a hobby. Interesting.
