Chiara Zonca Captures New Zealand in All its Otherworldly Beauty

Tuesday October 09, 2018 Written by Smith

In this post-Lord of the Rings age, it’s a bit of a cliché to talk about New Zealand as an otherworldly fantasyland. Still, sometimes the cliché works. And these photos from Chiara Zonca prove that the Land of the Long White Cloud still has the potential to capture the imagination, even without the help of Weta Workshop.

Like a certain fictional character once tasked with destroying a magical ring, the Canadian artist has a thing for volcanoes. Previous subjects for Zonca’s camera include magma, as well as the alien landscapes of South America’s Altiplano region. ‘it devours’ finds her back in seismic territory, capturing an andesitic stratovolcano 50 kilometres off New Zealand’s North Island. And for that we are grateful.

You can see the full series, as well as her other work, over here.
