The "ugly-insta" aesthetic just got a whole lot uglier. James Hull and Bede Brennan, the friends behind the hilarious Instagram account @shitgardens, are about to release a coffee table book dedicated to horticulturally challenged yards and gardens from around the world. Think: aspirational topiary displays, fascinating water features, and AstroTurf gone awry. It's called quite simply 'Shit Gardens' and it's dubbed as "the latest in hideous hedges, grotesque greenery and beastly backyards".
The story goes, Hull and Brennan moved to Melbourne from their home-town of Bellingen and were struck by the number of ghastly gardens crying out to be documented. After a string of gallery exhibitions and public displays, they pooled their squids and "scoured the suburbs in a burnt-out Camry" to produce the coffee-table book. It's getting launched on Saturday, May 26 at 6pm at Melbourne's Brunswick Street Book Store. Visit the Facebook event if you're in town and up for coming along.
