Italian photographer Francesco Pergolesi moved away from his small Italian hometown years ago. Every time he returned, it was a shock. More and more of his beloved local shops were closing down, as sprawling new malls proliferated throughout the ’burbs. So he roamed around Italy with his camera, in search of the tiny shops of his childhood memories, and the proprietors who were bucking the trends of “fast consumption”. Pergolesi describes these shops poetically as “guardians of a little vanishing world, brave and full of passion” adding that “They valiantly defend the meeting places for human exchange and relationships, set in unpretentious frames, nibbled by the passing of time.”
