The First 70 is a short film that captures the majestic beauty of California's parks, and the thoughts of the people who love and maintain them.
In May 2011 the state announced plans to close a quarter of the 278 parks in a bid to bridge budget deficits. By doing so, they planned to save millions, but they didn't plan on so many park lovers coming out of the woodwork (pun definitely intended).
The closures were scheduled to happen this month, but the latest news is that 65 of the 70 parks will stay open – for now. Thanks to enormous donations by not-for-profits, local government, the public as well as cost-sharing and agreements between park operators, the parks are safe for a few years at least.
