Woody Guthrie’s New Year’s Resolutions

We’re a day into 2018 and a few of our New Year’s resolutions have already been tested. Perhaps we should have followed Woody Guthrie’s advice to “Work more and better”.

It’s the first of 33 resolutions the singer-songwriter made in 1943, which also included “Learn people better” (15), “Wake up and fight” (33) and the always relevant “Wash teeth if any” (3). The full list – adorned with some playful doodles – is available here.

It seems strange to think that the famous and successful might need something as basic as a New Year’s resolution to get them motivated, but perhaps that’s what got them famous and successful in the first place. Here’s to another year of “beating fascism”, care of the ol’ Dust Bowl Troubadour.
