Jet packs, robot butlers, flying cars – people in the past thought the future would be pretty cool. But for Matt Novak of Paleofuture, futurism goes way beyond The Jetsons.
His website investigates predictions of the future from as far back as the 1870s – some of which are strangely Barbarella-like – taking in the good (commuting via persona bi-plane!) and the bad (nuclear holocaust!). It's as fascinating for what they got right as what they got wrong.
'Yes' to mobile phones, space exploration and laptops. So far 'no' to super-intelligent ape chauffeurs, giant babies and soldiers riding dolphins for underwater battles. Matt's current site is here and his archives are here.
