Good news for people who love old news

If you ever felt like leafing through some old newspapers but wanted to avoid the musty aura of the library, we'll let you in on a little nerdy secret.

For some time, the National Library Of Australia has been working on digitising the country's newspapers, to make sure they're not just tomorrow's fish and chips wrappers.

Go for the research perks and amusing aged advertisements, stay for the class and manners, such as this concluding sentence from a Letter to the Editor in The Maitland Mercury (8th of October, 1891): "Should you consider these remarks worthy of a place in your columns, you will oblige yours faithfully."

If only strident citizen opinionistas were as charming these days.
