Most success stories don't end with the protagonist cutting his sled in half with a pen knife and eating his sled dog. But the gory details don't dampen the trailblazing success of explorer Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition.
The State Library of NSW exhibition Finding Antarctica: Mapping the Last Continent commemorates the 100 year anniversary of Mawson's sail from Hobart. It includes maps, original sketches and rare published accounts of the great Antarctic tundra, which presumably leaves out the 'dog eating' details. Show ends February 19. Get there quick or you might have to wait another 100 years.
