The World's Smallest V12 Engine

The actual engines in this short video about José Manuel Hermo Barreiro (or 'Patelo'), a retired naval mechanic from Galicia, turns out not to be the most impressive thing in this short video. Taken alone, they are still impressive, the products of over 15,000 hours of work and completely handmade objects of engineering beauty. No CNC routers or 3D printers here.

What's truly compelling, however, is the depth of Patelo's passion, his Miyagi-isms, his demonstration of how something that may seem, on the surface, spiritually bereft can embody some of the best of humanity. It is, in short, seven minutes that are far more poignant than anything about camshafts ordinarily has a right to be.
