A sign for Smith

A sign for Smith

Luke Stockdale is a graphic designer and handyman from Melbourne who is making steel signs in Nashville, Tennessee, as Sideshow Sign Co.

We spoke to him for a feature in volume seven, and to help us understand the signmaking process he put Smith's name in lights. Turns out making steel signs is pretty gnarly – there are no books or demos online, so Stockdale had to figure it out for himself. Over the past 16 months he has burnt himself with acid, made countless trips to the local hardware store, and spent hours on Warhammer and Magic: The Gathering forums to master rust effects.

Aside from old-timey signs, Stockdake makes some very cool vintage prints, and typographic pieces. Nashville-based photographer Joshua Black Wilkins captured the Sideshow workshop and the signmaking process for the full story, which you'll find inside the mag.

Smith volume seven is on shelves in Australia now. Buy a copy here. Find your closest stockist here, or subscribe here.
