Most of the time, a rush of anger can be calmed with a few deep breaths, a count to ten, or a simple, ill-advised Facebook rant. But then there are the times when you just need to break something.
Artists Katja Kublitz and Ronnie Yarisol have created a work that aims to soothe your savage rage beast. Their Anger Release Machine is a standard-looking vending machine, only stocked with precariously held items made of porcelain and glass. Put a coin in the slot, choose an object to destroy, and – wham – that little angel figurine is history, and you’re blissing out on its destruction. In theory.
As this demonstration video indicates, the work might not quite deliver the release it promises. The punter in shot has to pump the machine with a few more coins than expected to get that damned plate to drop, and when it finally does, it’s a pretty low-key affair. Where are the shards of glass? The devastating smash? What of that glorious destruction you were hanging out for? It’s enough to give you the irrits.
