Long before his scandalous fall from grace as yet another high-profile casualty of the #MeToo movement, Charlie Rose was one of the United States’ most respected TV journalists, interviewing the illustrious likes of Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Quentin Tarantino. Watching this supremely awkward extract from an interview he did with Smith Journal fave David Lynch, though, you’d never guess it.
Complete with excruciating silences, bewildered expressions and the sense that the non-sequitur-laden dialogue is masking a profound subtext you’ll never get to the bottom of, the interview unfolds like a scene from one of the director’s own films. As Rose fumbles through his nonsensical questions like a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown, his deadpan, cherub-cheeked subject does nothing to save him, placidly smoking his cigarette and saying “Ummm” a lot. Micro-snippets from Lost Highway interspersed at random moments just add to the weirdness.
You’ve gotta see this footage to believe it. (And please don’t burst our bubble by suggesting it might be a clever edit. That’d just be mean.)
Speaking of #MeToo, here’s David Lynch’s endearingly wise take on sexual harassment.
