What was once a bustling fishing village, home to more than 2,000 people, is now a sea of verdant green. Houtouwan, located in the Shengsi Islands of China, has been abandoned since the early 1990s. The fishing community was struggling to compete with Shangai and so moved en masse to mainland China to seek out alternative employment. The story goes that a peek inside the deserted houses reveals furniture frozen in time, remaining just as it was placed when the inhabitants left.
