The Listening Machine

31 May by luke

Since time immemorial, man has wondered what the sound of 500 people tweeting was. Now techno-musical theorist Daniel Jones and composer Peter Gregson have created an algorithm that allows us to synthesise exactly that.

By analysing the Twitter output of 500 Britons, carefully selected from a broad array of fields, the program analyses the newly arriving tweets for sentiment, rhythm and subject classification and then encodes that into a ceaselessly unfurling wash of strings, horns and vocal stabs. Given the chaotic array that it's drawing inspiration from, the result is remarkably melodic – a roving exploration of point and counterpoint that really does sound reminiscent of Twitter's idea soup.
