If you're the kind of person who can make a cactus… well, cactus, then you'll appreciate these four plants that thrive on neglect.

plant 01 zzam

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia

Creature of the night? Blinds drawn during the day to keep out that pesky sun? Try the Zamioculcas zamiifolia, or ZZ for short. This glossy-leafed wonder can survive in near-darkness. Perfect for you horticultural vampires.

bamboo 02

Bamboo

If you’re going for a Zen-forest vibe, give bamboo a go. You can literally stick it in a jar of water and walk away. Plus, it makes us think of pandas which can only be a good thing for your chi.

anthru 03

Anthurium

Want a gaudy neon jungle in your dingy, cold terrace house? Try the Anthurium, also creepily called the “boy flower” thanks to its… endowments. You need to get the soil right – a mix of potting mix, peat and orchid bark – but otherwise, this is one hardy fella.

bromeliad plant 04

Bromeliads

Add a few bromeliads, the same family as pineapples, and it’s time to put your feet up with a cold ale in your tropical wonderland. This gardening thing ain’t so hard. Chin chin.
