Every year, the folk at National Geographic hold their esteemed Travel Photographer of the Year contest. This year, The Atlantic has shared some of the winning snaps, and they are – as you might expect – on the eye-catching side of interesting.
The winning photo, taken by Sergio Tapiro Velasco, captures Mexico’s Colima Volcano erupting, triggering an impressive lightning bolt. Andrzej Bochenski’s shot of the city of Al Ain, in the UAE, received an honourable mention, as did Yutaka Takafuji’s shot of princess fireflies lighting up a temple stairway in Tamba, Japan.
