Just an hour north of Budapest, Szödliget is a tiny lakeside town full of little A-frame huts and dainty bridges spanning across narrow waterways. Although travel websites frequently claim the town is abandoned, the area, which was established as a sports fishing lake in 1949, is actually regularly maintained.
In fact, Szödliget has its own yacht club, and is part of a nature preserve. It may not be abandoned, but if Viktor Egyed’s photos are anything to go by, the town is the perfect place for a little getaway – somewhere picturesque and quiet, if not entirely deserted.
