Given that we live in an era where both home ownership and self-sufficiency are increasingly abstract ideals (rather than realisable goals) exactly what "home" means in 2011 is an interesting question.
It's also the central question of filmmaker Jason Sussberg's short documentary, Shelter, about U.S. D.I.Y. construction guru Lloyd Kahn.
It's a fascinating film — Kahn's view of the world is a pleasant mix of idealism and realism (which is perhaps unsurprising from an old hippie who once constructed a geodesic dome to live in, only to bin the idea when he realised, years later, that it didn't actually, y'know, 'work').
He's pragmatic enough to appreciate that being entirely self-sufficient in 2011 is essentially impossible, but that attaining some measure of sustainability can be both financially advantageous and good for the soul.
