Like the landscape of the forest-fringed Californian township for which it is named, Altadena Works create bags that are beautiful and understated.
The label brings together the design skills of Australian-born Ricky Swallow and Ryan Conder, who owns men's boutique South Willard in Los Angeles. Swallow, a sculptor, painter and all-round maker, studied fine art in Melbourne and is now based in L.A.
All the bags are U.S.-made and use Cordura Ballistic fabric. If that sounds intense, it's because it is. The densely woven nylon was originally developed for use in flak jackets, providing protection from flying debris and bullet fragments. Yikes.
The bags offer functionality and longevity in every context: daily commuting, hiking, time travelling... That last one is a lie, but all the things you expect in a decent pack are there in the simple, straightforward design.
