Once a refuge for female orphans, Melbourne's Abbotsford Convent is now a multi-faceted cultural hub. The evolution of the space continues with the launch of a new open-air cinema, The Shadow Electric.
The cinema opened last week and will be screening an eclectic range of films until April, from the cult (Lolita) to the contemporary (Attack the Block). The cinema itself is classy; the screen was especially made in the US, it has Dolby 5.1 sound, there's a bar filled with bizarre Polish film posters and just before screenings hundreds of nearby nesting bats fly overhead.
