Zach Condon, the absurdly talented instrumental polymath behind Beirut, is the latest subject of Pitchfork's 5-10-15-20 series, where artists talk about their musical influences at the ages of 5, 10, 15 and... well, you can probably work out the rest.
While a childhood infatuation with the Beach Boys and a latter-day conversion to the church of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy seem on point, for a man who traffics largely in Franco-gypsy folk music, an adolescent turn through short-lived '90s rap outfit Souls of Mischief is a little unexpected.
Beirut is coming to Australia early in November for the Harvest Festival in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and should make for a film-worthy way to spend a sunny spring afternoon.
