Growing up gay and Asian in Australia was probably quite different to growing up gay and Asian in Asia. So Benjamin Law, perhaps our finest and funniest writer under 30, decided he should work out what he'd been missing out on.
Gaysia follows Ben as he does a continental trip of the Far East (well, more Near North for us), traipsing from Balinese sex resorts to Indian gay-curing yoga classes to hanging out with Thai ladyboys and HIV-positive sex workers in Burma. It makes for brave, unexpected, balls-to-the-wall gonzo anthropology – a fascinating insight into a world we tend not to pay much attention to, and a timely reminder of how far the fight against discrimination still has to go.
