In 2007, Paul Thomas Anderson released what many consider to be the filmmaker’s opus: the enthralling and eccentric There Will Be Blood. The film received near-unanimous praise (and plenty of awards), not least for its haunting score, composed by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood.
Now 10 years later, Greenwood’s score is set to be heard once again – this time given the full orchestra treatment as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. On Saturday August 5 at Melbourne’s Hammer Hall, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform the full soundtrack while the film plays on a big screen above. Lead by Hugh Brunt, who conducted the string and choir arrangements on Radiohead’s latest album, A Moon Shaped Pool, it’s set to be a thrilling performance. Just make sure to guard your milkshakes.
